Egotism, here is the treatment

A Treatment for Egotism

Is reported that Imâm Al-Shâfi’î – Allâh have mercy on him – said:
If you fear becoming deluded and impressed by your deeds then remember whose pleasure you are seeking, and the joy (Paradise) in which you want to be, and what punishment you fear. Whoever thinks about these things will diminish his deeds.
Al-Dhahabî, Siyar A’lâm Al-Nubalâ` 10:42.

Words of advice for our sisters and brothers

Bismillah

Here words of advice can benefit not only the sisters, but the brothers as well…

Umm ‘Abdillaah Al Waadi’iyyah Bint Ash Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee (rahmatullaahi ’alaihi) said after the opening du’aa,

“O sisters, Upon us is have mercy upon ourselves.  Save yourself from the Fire.  There is no way out for anyone from the Fitna that we are in now, except by sticking to what the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) came with.”

Hadeeth of Abu Najeeh Al ‘Irbaad bin Sariyyah’ (radhiyallaahu ’anhu):  The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) admonished us with an intense sermon which caused our hearts to tremble, and the eyes to shed tears. So, we said, Yaa Rasoolullaah (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) this is  as if it were your last sermon. (Aboo Daawood and others declared it Saheeh).

“There is no way out for anybody except by sticking to the Sunnah which the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) came with.  This holding requires submission, a complete submission.  As believers, it is a must on us.  We have to say regarding any command from Allaah Ta ‘Aalaa, and HIS Messenger (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam), “Sami’naa wa ata’naa,” (We hear and we obey), and not like the Yahood (Jews) who said, “We hear and we disobey.”   It is not befitting for the believing man nor the believing woman, when the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) comes with a decision, that they have a choice after the Prophet.”

O sisters, the truth is very heavy.  Falsehood is light (easy to accept).   It is very heavy, except with those whom Allaah made it easy for, and guided them for that.”

Hadeeth: Jannah is surrounded by undesirable things.  The Fire is surrounded by desires.

“O sisters, it is upon us that we get used to submitting to Allaah.” Umm ‘Abdillaah (hafidhahallaah) mentioned a poem:

Your nafs are always wanting if you make it a habit. If you control and limit yourself, that is what your nafs will get used to.”

“Do not say ‘why’ to the command of Allaah.“  Umm ‘Abdillaah (hafidhahallaah), gave the example of  Salaat. She said, “Pray and get used to it. We are commanded to Fast, so you must Fast, make Hajj and ‘Umrah.   HE, Ta ‘Aalaa, has made certain things compulsory towards the husband and we do not say why.”

“O sisters, it is up to us to preserve our tongue, especially because  the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) told us the reason why women are the majority in the Hell Fire.  Be more careful than men.  Women curse a lot and have many complaints.  It is not a good habit to complain to this sister, that sister, to this one, and that one.  Guard your tongue!”

Gheebah: It is to say something behind the back of your brother, that which he would not like to have been said, even if it is true, and if it is not true, then you have slandered him.

“When the believing woman leaves her home, she wears Hijaab, and she leaves the home properly.”

Allaah Ta ‘Aalaa said:

Translated to mean: And Stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance, and perform As-Salaat (Iqamaat‎us ‎ Salaat), and give Zakaat and obey Allaah and His Messenger. Allaah wishes only to remove Ar‎ Rijs (evil deeds and sins, etc.) from you, O members of the family (of the Prophet), and to purify you with a thorough purification.  33/33

“Allaah has made it waajib upon us to preserve our ears, and to avoid listening to songs, Gheebah, and Nameemah.  Allaah created us for ‘Eebaadah.  The Dunyaa is temporary and attractive.  The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) warned against submitting to the Dunyaa.”

Ham: All that you think of, and focus on.

The one whose Ham is the Dunyaa, Allaah will scatter from him, it could be from his family, his money, etc. All that he will see is poverty.  The person will not attain anything more than what is written for him.  Whoever focuses on the Aakhirah, all your needs will be brought near, and made easy for you.  The believing heart is rich, even if the believer is poor.  The World will come to you, it is forced to you.”

Hadeeth Qudsi: The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alaihi wa sallam) said that Allaah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’Aalaa said, “O children of Aadam (‘alaihis salaam), if you rush into worship, I will fill your hearts with Rizq (provision).  Do not neglect, (be alert).  If you neglect, I will fill your hands with poverty and things that will make you busy.”

“Allaah condemned the people who are filled with the Dunyaa.  Be careful, and aware of submitting to the Dunyaa.  Sit with As Saalihaat (the pious women), it has a lot of affects.  Go back to submitting to Allaah so that you will be from Ahlul Jannah.  Stick to The Book (The Qur’aan).  Seek ‘ilm of the Islaamic Law.  Try to understand the Book of Allaah, it is the best way to come close to HIM.  Be eager and anxious in seeking ‘ilm.  Be careful, do not do a deed until you know whether or not it is Halaal or Haraam.  Do not rush into it until you know.”

Where Should The Worshiper Look During Salat?

Ash-Shaykh Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:
The scholars have differed as to where one should look while standingin prayer. What is well known in the madhab of Imaam Maalik is thatthe one in prayer looks in front of him and the opinion of Imaam Ahmadis that he looks to the place of prostration and this is also theopinion of  Imaam  Ash-Shaaf’ee and Abu Haneefah and their proofs isthe narration( that is disconnected) of Muhammad bin Sireen whorelated that the Prophet, sallalaahu ‘alaihi wasallam, “used to lowerhis head and look down to the place of prostration” due to that beingmore effective in causing khush’u.Some scholars have said: Verily the Imaam and the one praying alonelooks to  the place of prostration. As for the Ma’muum ( the personbeing lead in prayer) then he looks at the Imaam and the proofs forthat(opinion) is the hadeeths in Al-Bukhaari which states that whenthe Messenger, alaihi as salaatu was salaam, prayed As-Salaatul Kusuufhe informed his companions that he was shown Jannah and the Hell-fire,so he said to them “that is when you saw me moving forward and movingbackwards”. This a proof that they were looking at him and from theproofs is the hadeeth which narrated that when the Prophet’s, alaihias salaatu was salaam, minbar was made he stood on it [ to prayer), sohe would stand and bow on it but however when he wanted to prostratehe would come down to prostrate on the floor and said "indeed I haveonly performed this so you can follow me and learn my prayer".This is a proof that they were looking at him and also the Sahaabasmentioned that the Messenger used to read in the  inaudible prayer, soit was said to them(the sahaabas) "what made you come to know that" sothey said "due to the moving of his beard". All of this is in asSaheeh Al-Bukhaari, so this is a proof that the ma'muum looks at theImaam due it being more perfective in following (the Imaam) and due tothe fact that the Imaam could stand or sit forgetfully, so the ma'muumlooks at the Imaam it will be more perfective for him in following theImaam. As for the Imaam and the one praying alone then he looks at theplace of prostration. This opinion is the closest to the truth (inthis matter) especially if the ma'muum is need of that (looking at theimam) for example if he is not able to hear (the Imaam) so then helooks at the Imaam so he can follow him or similar to that. However the exception to this is when one is in the sitting positionbecause he should look at his index finger due to the narration ofAbdullah bin Zubair that Prophet, 'alaihi as salaatu was salaam, nevermoved his eyes from his index finger. And also some has given anexception to it if he was praying in the Masjid Al-Haraam while it ispossible for him to see the Ka'bah then he looks at the Ka'bah andalso if one were praying As-Salaatul Khawf while the enemy is aroundhim so here (in this scenario) he looks at the direction of the enemybut however the correct opinion regarding the matter regarding theKa'bah is that the prayer does not look at it due to there being noproof for that. Also due to that might be a distraction especially ifthere is people performing at Tawaaf around him.[The Reference: Tafseer Suratil Baqarah (2/126-127) Pint: Daar  Ibnil Jawzee.]

Disobedience is a Fierce Enemy to Mankind

From among the punishments of sin is that disobedience becomes a fierce enemy to mankind like an army which fortifies itself and prepares for war.

That is to say that Allaah tests the Son of Adam with an enemy who does not leave his side for a single moment; a companion who is never remiss in thinking about him, nor is he neglectful of him. This adversary to man, Iblees and his tribe, are able see the human being from a standpoint where he can’t see them. He exerts every effort to unleash his hostility under every circumstance.

In his plotting, he doesn’t leave anything out. Iblees is able to reach his foe and attach himself to him. This opponent seeks the help of the Shayateen and Jinn in his battle against the offspring of Adam. He throws his net over them and wishes disaster. This enemy lays traps around the servant. He lays these traps and nets for him and says to his helpers,” Draw near to your enemy, and the enemy of your father! Don’t let him slip away from you and attain his portion in the Paradise, leaving you to attain your share of the fire; his portion is mercy and your portion shall be a curse. You are aware of the disgrace, curse and the separation from Allaah’s mercy that has been inflicted upon me. Adam is the cause of that. So, exert every effort to sway his progeny to join us as companions in this misery. And remember a band of them have already escaped us whose righteous are in Jannah.

Allaah has informed us about our enemy. He has commanded us to stand ready against him when He told Adam that his descendants would be tested with an enemy accompanied by armies and forces that would be given authority over them. Also, in their encounter with this foe, they should be aware that the army of their enemy is reinforced by soldiers and comrades. Know that the battle is waged in this abode during the extent of his life which is, in comparison to the next life, is like the extent of one breath.

Allaah has purchased from the believers as the cost for entering Jannah, their souls and wealth. They fight for the sake of Allaah. They kill and are killed-all for the pleasure of their Lord. Allaah has informed us of this sure promise in the most honorable of books- the Torah, the Injeel and the Quran .He states that He doesn’t break any promise. Following this, Allaah orders the servants to rejoice in this bargain. Whosoever wants to know the value of this trade then let him look to who is the purchaser? Let him look at the cost that is paid for   this commodity. And look to He who fulfills this contract.  Is there any success greater than this? Is there a transaction   more profitable than this? Allaah has guaranteed this   for the believers in….

Seeking Forgiveness

Imam Al-Nawawi’s Riyad-us-Saliheen
Chapter 371
Seeking Forgiveness

Allah, the Exalted, says:

And ask forgiveness for your sin…” (47:19)

And seek the forgiveness of Allah. Certainly, Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (4:106)

And declare the freedom of your Rubb from imperfection beginning with His praise, and ask His forgiveness. Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and Who forgives.” (110:3)

For Al-Muttaqun (the pious) there are Gardens (Jannah) with their Rubb, underneath which rivers flow. Therein (is their) eternal (home) and Azwajun Mutahharatun (purified mates or wives). And Allah will be pleased with them. And Allah is All-Seer of the (His) slaves. Those who say: `Our Rubb! We have indeed believed, so forgive us our sins and save us from the punishment of the Fire. (They are) those who are patient, those who are true (in Faith, words, and deeds), and obedient with sincere devotion in worship to Allah. Those who spend (give the Zakat and alms in the way of Allah) and those who pray and beg Allah’s Pardon in the last hours of the night.” (3:15-17)

And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks Allah’s forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (4:110)

And Allah would not punish them while you (Muhammad (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam)) are amongst them, nor will He punish them while they seek (Allah’s) forgiveness.” (8:33)

And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; – and none can forgive sins but Allah – and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.” (3:135)

The Qur’anic Ayat on the subject are many and well-known.

1869.  Al-Agharr Al-Muzani (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “Sometimes I perceive a veil over my heart, and I supplicate Allah for forgiveness a hundred times in a day.”
[Muslim].

Commentary:  Ghain  and Ghaim  are two synonyms. They signify the spreading of the clouds. It refers in this Hadith to the fact that the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) was reciting the Names of Allah and remembering Him all the time. But sometimes due to being too busy in the affairs of the public or due to human needs, there was a pause in this eternal remembrance. Although such a pause was only momentary, this momentary pause was very much disliked by him; and considering it a slackness on his part, he prayed for forgiveness from Allah. In this there is an important lesson for us.

In spite of our many sins and negligence on our part, we do not turn to Allah and seek forgiveness; while, although our Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) had all his past and future sins forgiven by Allah, he sought forgiveness very often.

1870.  Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) saying, “I swear by Allah that I seek Allah’s Pardon and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.”
[Al-Bukhari].

1871.  Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “By the One in Whose Hand my soul is! If you do not commit sins, Allah would replace you with a people who would commit sins and seek forgiveness from Allah; and Allah will certainly forgive them.”
[Muslim].

Commentary: This Hadith does not mean that Allah likes disobedience. But by this way of description, the aim is to emphasize the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah. We know that every man commits sins. But Allah likes those people who, after committing a sin, do not stick to it, but right away seek forgiveness for their sins from Allah. They weep and express sorrow before Allah. By seeking forgiveness, a relationship with Allah is established between man and his Creator. So seeking forgiveness is a very good act.

1872.  Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: We counted Messenger’s saying a hundred times during one single sitting: Rabb-ighfir li, wa tubb `alayya, innaka Antat-Tawwabur-Rahim. (My Rubb! Forgive me and pardon me. Indeed, You are the Oft-Returning with compassion and Ever Merciful.”
[Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].

Commentary: This Hadith tells us about the etiquette of praying to Allah. We should use the Names of Allah befitting our prayers, i.e., the Names of Allah signifying those Attributes of Allah which have a special concern with the subject of our particular prayer, i.e., while seeking forgiveness, His Names concerning His Attributes of forgiveness and kindness should be used. On the other hand, while praying for worldly matters, we should mention His Qualities of charity and bestowing gifts etc.

1873.  Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.”
[Abu Dawud].

Commentary:  The chain of this narration is weak. Refer to `The Book of Weak Narrations’ by Al-Albani, Vol. I, page 142, No.705.

1874.  Ibn Mas`ud (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “He who says: `Astaghfir ullah-alladhi la ilaha illa Huwal-Haiyul-Qayyumu, wa atubu ilaihi (I seek the forgiveness of Allah, there is no true god except Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting, and I turn to Him in repentance),’ his sins will be forgiven even if he should have run away from the battlefield (while he was engaged in fighting for the Cause of Allah).”
[Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi and Al-Hakim (on conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim for accepting Hadith)].

Commentary:  When we say that this narration fulfills the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim; it means that its narrators are the narrators of Al-Bukhari and Muslim. Secondly, in this selection those conditions have also been kept in view, which are the landmark of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

1875.  Shaddad bin Aus (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “The best supplication for seeking forgiveness (Syed-ul-Istighfar) is to say: `Allahumma Anta Rabbi, la ilaha illa Anta, khalaqtani wa ana `abduka, wa ana `ala `ahdika wa wa`dika mastata`tu, a`udhu bika min sharri ma sana`tu, abuu laka bini`matika `alayya, wa abuu bidhanbi faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa Anta. (O Allah! You are my Rubb. There is no true god except You. You have created me, and I am Your slave, and I hold to Your Covenant as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge the favours that You have bestowed upon me, and I confess my sins. Pardon me, for none but You has the power to pardon).’ He who supplicates in these terms during the day with firm belief in it and dies on the same day (before the evening), he will be one of the dwellers of Jannah; and if anyone supplicates in these terms during the night with firm belief in it and dies before the morning, he will be one of the dwellers of Jannah.”
[Al-Bukhari].

1876. Thauban (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) finished his Salat (prayer), he would beg forgiveness three times [by saying, `Astaghfirullah' (3 times)] and then he would say: “Allahumma Antas-Salamu, wa minkas-Salamu, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram. (O Allah! You are the Bestower of security and security comes from You; Blessed are You. O Possessor of glory and honour).” Imam Al-Auza`i (one of the subnarrators) of this Hadith was asked: “How forgiveness should be sought?” He replied: “I say: Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah. I seek forgiveness from Allah).”
[Muslim].

Commentary:  This Du`a’ was a Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam), and it is highly recommended to recite it after Salat.

1877. `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: Prior to his demise, the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) used to supplicate frequently: Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi; Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilaihi (Allah is free from imperfection, and I begin with praising Him. I beg forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary:  In general, asking of forgiveness all the time is necessary and commendable. But during the old age and the last days of one’s life it is particularly very essential. In this way, the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) would also be followed.

1878.  Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) saying, “Allah, the Exalted, has said: `O son of Adam! I shall go on forgiving you so long as you pray to Me and aspire for My forgiveness whatever may be your sins. O son of Adam! I do not care even if your sins should pile up to the sky and should you beg pardon of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! If you come to Me with an earthful of sins and meet Me, not associating anything with Me in worship, I will certainly grant you as much pardon as will fill the earth.”’
[At-Tirmidhi].

Commentary: In this narration, there is good news for the sinners who do not stick to sins but rather repent and ask forgiveness from Allah. However numerous their sins may be, Allah will forgive all their sins. But there is a condition which they should fulfill, namely that they do not persist in what wrong they have done (3:135), as with persistence and repeatedly committing the sin, the act of seeking forgiveness becomes a futile act.

1879.  Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “O women folk! You should give charity and be diligent in seeking Allah’s forgiveness because I have seen (i.e., on the Night of the Ascension to the highest heavens) that dwellers of the Hell are women.” A woman amongst them said: “Why is it that the majority of the dwellers of Hell are women?” The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. In spite of your lacking in wisdom and failing in religion, you are depriving the wisest of men of their intelligence.” Upon this the woman asked: “What is the deficiency in our wisdom and in our religion?” He (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) replied, “Your lack of wisdom can be well judged from the fact that the evidence of two women is equal to that one man. You do not offer Salat (prayer) for some days and you do not fast (the whole of) Ramadan sometimes, it is a deficiency in religion.”
[Muslim].

Commentary:
1. In this narration, certain weaknesses of the female sex have been pointed out, which are natural and pertain to the woman’s biology, psychology and embryology.

According to biologists, during and before menstruation, a female’s thought process is affected. Similarly, her pulse and blood pressure are also altered. Females are also more prone to hysteria. For these reasons, the Qur’an has declared that when you have to appoint or choose witnesses among women, you should choose two in place of one man. Modern researches have proved this rule to be correct on the basis of biology, psychology and embryology.

Again we know that physically speaking, the female has been named as the weaker sex. For these reasons, females have been excused from earning their livelihood. For earning livelihood, one may have to go out and work hard. Women have been exempted from this duty because of their biological differences and other considerations of Shari`ah. Present-day women who are ignorant of Islam and modern researches are not prepared to accept these scientifically and religiously proved facts. The West claims equality between the sexes. But this equality has not been established so far. Today all the important posts are occupied by males and all the international policies are framed by them alone. Even matters pertaining to women are decided by them. They have mostly relegated them to the posts of workers, secretaries and stenographers for their sexual satisfaction and enjoyment. After a struggle for hundred years, their condition today proves that they are the weaker sex.

So, it is both beneficial and more respectful for her to limit herself to the sphere of action suggested for her by Islam. If she oversteps her sphere, she will certainly lose her female dignity and prestige, as has happened in the West. Her state and condition there is an eyeopener for all.

2. Women should request forgiveness from Allah very often and be generous in charity. They should not show ungratefulness to their husbands and should avoid backbiting and cursing others so that they may save themselves from Hell.

Being kind to one’s daughters.

Aisha may Allah be please with her narrated: One day a poor woman with two daughters came to mean I gave her three dates so she gave each of them a date. She then raised the date to her mouth to eat it, but her two daughters wanted it so she broke the date and gave each half.  Thus I was truly amazed by her act of kindness.  So I mentioned to him may peace and blessings be upon him, what she did,and he said, “Because Allah made it incumbent that He enters her into Jannah, and He saves her from the fire.”  And in another narration it states, “whosoever is tested with these daughters, and he/she is kind to them, then that will be a protection for him/her against the fire.”

Benefits from this hadeeth.

This hadeeth illustrates Aisha’s radiyallahu anhaa, generoity, kindness, and the love to do good for others.  For in some narrations its states that all she had to eat were those dates she gave the poor woman. And this was something well known about her, for one time Mu’aawiyah radiyallahu anhu sent her a hundred thousand dirhams and before the day was over she gave it all away to the poor and needy.
