We are strangers

On the authority of ibn Masud that the Messenger of Allah said, “Islam began as something strange, so tuba to the strangers.”  It was asked of him, Messenger of Allah, who are they?  He replied, “Those who correct the affairs at a time when people become corrupt.”

al-Hasan said, “In this world the believer is like a stranger, he does not despair when it humiliates him, and neither does he covet its grandeur.”

Can we really apply this statement to us as Muslims, who follow the Salafi dawah?  When has this world become more important than Paradise?  When keeping our shop open is more important than  praying  in congregation?  (Men in Islam are mandate to establish their five daily prayers at the Masjid) What is our ambition, what is your ambition?

In the book; The Description of the Strangers , on their interpretation of the hadeeth mention above, the authors will say:

“Before the advent of the Messenger of Allah people would adhere to different religions. Among them were the Jews, Christians, the Magian and the polytheist.  They viewed them as strangers in the individual localities and strangers among their tribe.  They were ostracised by their family, humiliated and belittle.  Never to step down from their believe… Therefore, in the beginning Islam was something strange.”

And we Muslim of the 21st century complain so much.  We always blame everyone else for our short comings.  In this day and age we have many options to choose from.  If we can not practice in one place for fear of any kind of discrimination, move away from the area.  Make provision for change  to happen.  Stand for something or fall for everything.

In this day and age Islam has return to being something strange. Is a lot of misguided innovations, many groups of deviants who lure Muslim and non-Muslims to join in.  The Muslim who knows his religion and understand what tawheed is, who has taken the time to study aqeedah, who has command of the Arabic language to understand the Qur’an and books of Ahadeeth, and adhere to the Legal Law of Islam  are the ones who will become successful.

The Messenger of Allah said, “My nation shall divide into seventy-three sects, all of them will be in the Fire save one.”  When asked who the saved sect was, he replied, “That which is upon what I and my Companions are upon.” *

Khattabi, Ma’alim al-Sunan, volume.4, page. 295, said, “This hadith proves that all the sects mentioned there fall within the fold of Islam because the Prophet, salalahu alahim wa salam, stated they were all from his nation.  The hadith also proves that the one who mistakenly makes a wrong interpretation is not taken outside the fold of Islam.’

The Prophet of Allah said;

We command the good and prohibit the evil until you see parsimony being obeyed, desires being followed, the world being preferred, and every person being amazed at his own opinion; at the time when you see affairs that you cannot change, concern yourself with yourself and avoid the masses. Those will be the days of patience andbecomes patient among them will be like holding on to red-hot coals.

This then is one of the characteristics of the stranger:  one who remains steadfast and patient upon his religion so that he can safeguard himself against misguided innovation.

Can you say, oh Muslimun you fit these characteristics?  We are not perfect, we all fall short and is the reason we ask for forgiveness .  Our Prophet use to ask for forgiveness over a 100 times a day.  And, who is better than him?

Who is the intelligent Muslim?   Could it be the one who knows more Qur’an, more Arabic, who covers the most or prays the most?  Let us read what Ibn Rajab Al Hanbali and Abu Bakr Al Ajurri describe the intelligent Muslim.

So the intelligent Muslim, one whom Allah has granted understanding of the religion, one whom Allah has allowed to see his own defects, one whom Allah has shown the truth of  what the people are on and nourished him with the ability to discern truth from falsehood, and good from bad, what is beneficial from what is harmful, one who knows his rights and his duties-the intelligent Muslim is one who knows his rights and his duties-the intelligent Muslim is one who resolutely adheres to the truth among those who are ignorant of it, many of whom have but submitted to innovation.  These people do not care how much they lose of the religiosity so long as their worldly ends are met.  When they see one who differs from them, they cannot bear it and oppose him…

Such a person will become a stranger because of his following his religion, stranger in his dealings with people, strange in all the matters of this world and those related to the Hereafter.  He will be hard put to find someone to help him or to take solace with….

Where you to see him when he is alone, you would see him crying in anxiety, tears streaming down his cheeks and letting out deep apprehensive, sighs. If yo did not know him, you would think him to be a parent who has lost a child, but this is not the case, rather he is in a state of concern about his religion, indifferent to losing out on some worldly lot if  it means preserving it.

THE CAPITAL OF THE BELIEVER IS HIS RELIGION, IT IS ALWAYS WITH HIM, HE DOES NOT LEAVE IT BEHIND WHEN ON A JOURNEY AND NEITHER DOES HE ENTRUST IT TO ANOTHER.

Can these ? Take an inventory, find where you at.  It might be that you fall short but are able to increase your good deeds, learn more about your religion and always remember the prize.

  1. Hi, nice work.
I suggest you visit my blog; it’s about Islam too, but in a different way.
Unfortunately, all the articles are in Arabic except just one in English. However, I am yet to translate the entire blog to English soon.

    All the best
