In the name of Allah , the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
All praises are due to Allah. We praise Him and seek His assistance. We ask for His forgiveness and take refuge in Him from the evil within ourselves and from the evil of our deeds. He whom Allah guides will never be diverted yet whomever He sends astray will never find his way. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, Alone, He has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhmmmad is His servant and Messenger, may the blessing of Allah be upon him, his family, his companions, and upon those who followed his guidance.
Ibn al-Qayyim said that the word tawheed is the reason for which: Balances of justices are set up, records of deeds are registered, the day of paradise and hell is appointed, creatures are divided into believers and disbelievers, pious and evil-doers, the religion of Islam is established and swords are unsheathed for Jihaad.
The Word of Tawheed is Allah’s right over all His creatures.
How important is Tawheed? Tawheed is the difference between a Muslim and a non-Muslim. Tawheed is the difference between Paradise and the Hell Fire.
Inclusively, one of the most important subject of these requirements is the doctrine of Al-Wala’ wal Bara’. And we have become foreign to these principle of faith. Why is so important?, you may ask.
This doctrine is basically a pillar for the actual practice of faith. Is of tremendous significance in the mind of those who really understand what allegiance and severance really is.
Tawheed in all its greatness will never be achieve on earth until we apply the doctrine of Al wala’ wal bara.
“O you who believe! Take no the Jew and the Christians as Awliya’, they are but Awliya to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Awliya’ then surely he is on of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are the Zaalimun. (Surat at-Tawbah 23- 24)
Sheikh Hamd Ben Ateeq, said: In the Book of Allah there is no ruling more apparent and significant than the ruling of al wala wal bara’, after the requirment of Tawheed and the prohibition of its opposite.
Something truly amazing, by reading this book, I really understand why is so important to apply al wala wal bara in all of our affairs. The Muslim nation was one of invention, in math, science and many other areas we surpass other nations. Now we are left winged people with only one agenda terrorism. That is all we are today. Our religion in all of is purity was glorious, beautiful and different. We gave the world Taheed, we gave them our last Messenger we gave the world an opportunity to learn and know about Islam. So, why is so difficult to do so once again? Let’s see what lies underneath:
1. the Muslim Ummah has fallen behind, after it abandoned Jihad, which is the top of Islam, and followed pleasures of the world. Remember Jihad is not only by the sword.
2. It imitates other nations and become engrossed in luxuries and comfort.
3. It’s thoughts have been confused because it mixed up the pure principles of Islam with heresy of human beings and the philosophies of Jahiliyyah.
4. It has obeyed the disbelievers and preferred worldly gains t its religion, but it lost both this world and the hereafter.
Take notice of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab, comment:
“Islam of a man can never be accepted, even if he abandons polytheism, unless he shows enmity towads the disbeleivers and polytheists, as Allah says in Surat al-muja’dilah 22. “You will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred.”
Twenty forms of alliance with the disbelievers.
1. Contentment with the disbelievers.
The first type of alliance is represented by contentment with the disbelievers and with their disbelief, including the refusal to acknowledge their disbelief or being in doubt about it.
2. Reliance on the disbelievers.
Allah talah says: “The believers shall not take the disbelievers as allies in preference to the believers. Whoever does this shall never be helped by Allah in any way, except if you indeed fear a danger from them. And Allah warns you to beware of Him, unto Allah is the final return.”
I believe this ayah is self explanatory.
3. Agree with points of disbelief.
And Allah talah says in this regard: “Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book? They believe in Jibt and Taaghut and say to the disbelievers that they are better guided in the way than the beievers.” An-Nisa 51
4. Seeking the affection of the disbelievers.
Allah subhana wa talah forbids such conduct: You will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred.” Al mujadilah 22.
5. Inclining towards the disbelievers.
“Do not incline towards those, who are unjust or the fire will touch you, and you have no protectors other than Allah, nor would you then be helped.” Hud 113.You will not find toads taking frogs as friends.
6. Flattery of the disbeliever’s faith.
Allah aza wa jal says: “They wish that you should compromise with them, so they too would compromise with you.” Al Qalam 9
7. Taking disbelievers as friends.
To take disbelievers as intimate friends is to ally yourself to them. Allah aza wa jal says: “ O you who believe! Take not as your fiends those outside your religion… Al Imraan 118.
“Abu Dawud reports that the Prophet of Allah, salah alahu alahi wa salam said: “A person’s religion is the same as that of his friend, so each of you should be careful who he takes for friends.” Sunan Abee Dawud in the Book of Manners Vol. 5/168”
8. Obedience to the Disbelievers.
Allah subhana wa talah says, “Do not obey those whose hearts We have made heedless of Our remembrance, those who follow their won desires and whose affairs have been lost.” Al Khaf 28.
9. To sit with the disbelievers who ridicule the Qur’an
10. To give the disbeliever authority over Muslims.
11. Trusting the disbelievers.
12. To express pleasure with the actions of the disbelievers.
13. To draw near to the disbelievers.
14. To aid the disbeliever in wrongdoing
15. To seek the advice of disbelievers.
16. To honor the disbelievers.
17. To live amongst the disbelievers.
To settle down to live in the midst of the disbelievers and increase their numbers is to ally yourself to them. The Prophet Muhammad salah alahu alahi wa salam said: “Whoever joins the disbelievers and lives amongst them is one of them.” Abu dawud, Kitab a Jihad vol 3/224, Hadith 2787. Albani classifies it as Hasan.
18. To collude with the disbelievers.
19. To revile the Muslim and love the disbelievers.
Those who flee from the lands of the Islam to the lands of disbelief, who revile the Muslims and love the disbelivers are their allies.
20. To support the ideologies of the disbelievers.
Most of these points are self explanatory, some of them I choose to attach some form of daleel. Our Lord made the religion of Al Islam simple, but simplicity does not mean to pick and choose what is convenient for us at any given time. Either you are a Muslim or your not. Is no in between. It took me many years to understand the concept of Al wala wal bara, and now I see how important it is for us to adhere to it.
This information with much more details can be found in the book Al wala wal bara, written by Muhammad Saeed al Qahtani. Second book of three. According to the aqeedah of the Salaf.
May Allah subhana wa tala grant us tawfiq and keep us all in the right path. And may this Sacred month of Ramadan be a path for tawassul towards Allah subahana wa talah.
